Two researchers from the Department of Sociology at the University of Zurich have recently secured research grants. Isabel Raabe has been awarded an ERC Starting Grant, while Valentina Petrović has received an SNSF Ambizione Grant. Both stipends are to support early career science researchers in their research endeavors.

A new article by Valentina Petrović, Larissa Fritsch, and Simon Walo examines the attitudes of right-wing populist party (RPP) voters in Croatia and Serbia. Focusing on cultural values, economic preferences, and political trust, the authors identify both similarities and differences between the two electorates.

In a new article Valentina Petrović and Jörg Rössel examine whether the Swiss Federal Council’s decision to terminate negotiations on the institutional framework agreement with the European Union influenced public attitudes toward European integration using survey data collected around the announcement in May 2021.

From May 28 to 30, Maëlle Delouis-Jost and Alessandra Stampi-Bombelli attended the 14th Visions in Methodology (VIM) conference, held for the first time in Europe at the Hertie School in Berlin. VIM brings together scholars who identify as women and who work in political methodology. Maëlle won the poster prize for her work on conscription and belonging in unified Germany. Alessandra presented work on an experiment on naturalization barriers, done in collaboration with the City of Zurich.

In a new publication in Social Networks, Eszter Vit and Isabel Raabe examine how classroom gender composition influences friendship formation among adolescents and tests whether gender homophily shifts in different social contexts.

We are very happy to share that the project «Mobilization around Inequalities: Navigating Deservingness, State Capacity, and Political Actors in Eastern Europe (RISE)» has been awarded funding from the Swiss National Science Foundation, starting this September 2026. 

Dr. Malte Doehne and Prof. Dr. Katja Rost analyze how innovations spread in large, heterogeneous populations. Using the Swiss labor market as a case, they show that diffusion depends on whether innovations align with prevailing norms or require structural change, as well as on whether they originate in central or peripheral groups.
