Marco Giesselmann, David Brady, and Tabea Naujoks win the 2025 Robert K. Merton Award
This year's Robert K. Merton Award is given to Marco Giesselmann (SUZ), David Brady (University of Southern California), and Tabea Naujoks (Universität Rostock) for their paper on «The Increase in Refugees to Germany and Exclusionary Beliefs and Behaviors», published 2024 in the American Journal of Sociology.

«Growth mindset and socioeconomic inequality in academic achievement across seventy-three PISA countries» by Joan E. Madia, Rob J. Gruijters, Isabel J. Raabe & Nicolas Hübner
A new analysis of PISA 2022 data from 73 countries shows that having a growth mindset, which means believing that abilities can develop with effort and practice, has only a minimal effect on achievement differences. It accounts for about 3 percent of the socioeconomic gap in academic performance. This means that mindset plays a very minor role, and changing students’ beliefs on its own will not substantially reduce educational inequality.

Luca Chiapperino's talk plunges into the moral paradox of the epigenetic study of the developmental origins of health and disease: a science born out of evidencing structural, life-course determinants of multigenerational health effects which are routinely translated into individualized parental behaviour change and controversial maternal responsibilities.

🏫 Eine Untersuchung des Soziologischen Instituts im Auftrag des Eidgenössischen Justiz- und Polizeidepartements zeigt, dass fast alle Bundesparlamentarier:innen und drei Viertel der Kantonsparlamentarier:innen von Hassrede, Drohungen oder gar Gewalt im Zusammenhang mit ihrem Amt berichten.

Valentina Petrović at the IZA Days of the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation
Valentina Petrović recently contributed to the Internationale Zusammenarbeit Days of the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC), Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA). She gave a keynote on the current democratic developments in Southeastern Europe and the role of the diaspora, and took part in a panel discussion. Her participation highlights how research on democracy and political participation can connect with policy and practice in international cooperation.

«Down and out? the role of household income in students’ friendship formation in school-classes» - new study by Isabel Raabe et al.
Adolescents from low-income families have fewer opportunities to form friendships and integrate socially at school. This was the result of a study which examined data from over 200 school classes in Sweden, led by Isabel Raabe from the University of Zurich and her colleagues Chaïm la Roi and Stephanie Plenty from Stockholm University.

Kinder aus armen Familien werden bei der Bildung benachteiligt. Diese neue Studie widerlegt die Annahme, dass "Wachstumsdenken", Charaktereigenschaften und die Einstellung zum Lernen der Kinder einen grossen Einfluss darauf haben, wie gut sie in der Schule abschneiden. Um Bildungsgleichheit zu stärken, braucht es frühere und bessere Förderung.

Hierzulande gilt: Trotz gleicher Leistung schlechtere Chancen. Jugendliche aus Arbeiterfamilien schaffen es bei gleicher Leistung deutlich seltener ans Gymnasium als Kinder aus Akademikerhaushalten. Dafür gibt es verschiedene Gründe; manche liegen im Schulsystem selbst.

Neue Studie veröffentlicht: Kulturverhalten in der Schweiz
In der 32. Ausgabe der Zeitschrift Social Change in Switzerland zeigen Sebastian Weingartner und Jörg Rössel, dass die schweizerische Bevölkerung zwischen 1976 und 2019 kulturell deutlich aktiver geworden ist. Dominierten in den 1970er Jahren die kulturell Inaktiven, sind heute die Eklektiker – die kulturellen «Allesfresser» – die grösste Gruppe. Auch der Anteil der Hochkulturfans hat zugenommen. Diese finden sich jedoch zunehmend nur noch in den älteren Generationen.
