Sunbelt 2025

Founded in 1977, the Sunbelt, organized each year by the International Network for Social Network Analysis (INSNA), is the world's primary conference of researchers engaged in social network analysis spanning the social sciences. In June, the Sunbelt 2025 was held in Paris, at Sciences Po and Sorbonne University. As part of the conference, Per Block (University of Zürich) held a keynote following the Freeman award he received at last year’s Sunbelt in recognition of his significant contributions to the scientific study of social structure and social network analysis.

«Networks of Social Positions»

In his keynote, Per Block discusses modeling social positions - such as occupations or neighborhoods – as networks, interconnected by individuals’ mobility or relations, such as residential mobility, career paths, or marriages. This modelling approach allows for new insights into an array of emergent phenomena central to Sociology, including sex segregation in the labour market, the inheritance of advantage, or cohesion of societies.
