Congratulations on a successful thesis defense, Maila Mertens!

On Monday, Maila Mertens successfully defended her Doctoral Thesis, which explores research questions on Medically Assisted Reproduction (MAR) with a gender perspective. Congratulations, Maila!

Maila Mertens started her doctoral programm at the chair of Prof. Dr. Jörg Rössel in 2022. She studied sociology and British and American literature and culture at the universities of Hamburg and Konstanz. There she worked as a research assistant in the areas of social structure analysis, quantitative methods and gender studies. Her research interests include inequality, especially gender inequality, as well as family and medical sociology.

As part of the interdisciplinary research priority program Human Reproduction Reloaded, she examines the social implications of human reproduction. Her doctoral thesis consits of the three papers, one of which is in the publication process and examines the relationship between acceptance of MAR and gender ideology. The interdisciplinary university research focus Human Reproduction Reloaded has set itself the goal of investigating the social implications and legal issues of rapidly changing medical technology in the field of human reproduction and developing policy guidelines on this subject.
